Photographic Artist Madeleine Phiri explores rural living in Russia. In the West, a self-sustainable life style is almost unimaginable, but this is reality for many in Russian villages. A wide variety of vegetables are planted and harvested by the Холодова (Holodova) family and used for consumption rather than resale. Борщ (Borshch) is the widely known red stew and a celebrated national dish. The ingredients are home grown and Madeleine created a series of Cyanotypes alongside the recipe, which is hand written in Cyrillic. The photographs of the field, kitchen and gardening tools are printed from black & white negatives in the darkroom using Liquid Light on high quality textured paper. Gems from Madeleine’s grandmother’s photo album tell their own stories of rural living.
